Lyn, Ontario – Dive Ontario was able to interview Malak Elakkad from the Gatquatic Diving Club. Diving runs in Malak’s family, her mother’s involvement in diving has impacted her desire to try the sport. Malak is an accomplished diver who continues to shoot for the stars.

Q: At what age did you begin to dive?
I started diving when I was 8 years old.
Q: Why did you start diving?
My mother was a diver and she encouraged me to try the sport.
Q: What keeps you motivated?
I remember why I started and that keeps me going on. I try to balance what I’m doing so I don’t have to take couple of months to get back where I was physically after COVID.
Q: Favourite dive?
I like inward dives in general but the 403C (inward one and half) is my favorite.
Q: What is your greatest diving accomplishment?
I am a member of Team Ontario and I almost qualified for Nationals.
Q: What does diving mean to you?
Diving means a lot to me, I’m at my best when I dive.
Q: Do you play other sports?
I don’t practice any other sport at the moment, but I play soccer, volleyball and basketball at school. I also play tennis with my friends for fun.

Q: What are some lessons you have learned since you began diving?
Diving made me stronger and more focused

Q: Biggest fear while diving?
My biggest fear is hitting the board.

Q: Favourite workout song?
I listen to different songs every time I workout.
Q: What is the best part of competing?
Meeting my friends from other clubs. We only get to see each other during competitions as we live in different cities/provinces.
Q: Who is your biggest cheerleader/support?
My mother, my friends and my coach are my biggest support.

Q: What are your long-term goals for diving?
Getting a diving scholarship.
Q: Do you have a pre-competition routine?
I don’t have a specific pre-competition routine. Every competition has its own circumstances and fears.
