Coaches

Coaches play a vital role in introducing athletes to the sport, developing skills, and fostering a positive and safe training environment. Dive Ontario supports coaches at every stage of their journey, from first-time instructors to experienced coaches relocating to the province.

There is no single pathway into coaching. Many successful diving coaches arrive through different experiences, backgrounds, and life stages. If you are interested in giving back to the sport or exploring coaching as a new opportunity, there may already be a pathway that fits you.

Former Diver

Many coaches begin their journey as former competitive divers.

Some return to the sport after time away, perhaps after moving for school, work, or other opportunities, and are looking to reconnect with diving in a new role. Former divers bring valuable experience, technical understanding, and firsthand knowledge of the athlete journey.

This pathway is well suited for individuals who:

  • Have prior competitive diving experience
  • Are looking to stay involved in the sport
  • Want to share their knowledge with the next generation

Clubs often welcome former divers into assistant or developmental coaching roles and support them as they work toward formal coaching education and certification.

Current or Aging Athlete

Many coaches take their first steps into coaching while they are still active divers.

Older athletes often begin by helping with Learn to Dive or recreational programs, supporting younger athletes under the supervision of certified coaches. This provides an excellent introduction to coaching, leadership, and communication skills while remaining connected to the sport as an athlete.

This pathway offers:

  • A gradual transition from athlete to coach
  • Opportunities to gain experience in a supervised setting
  • Skill development in leadership and mentorship
  • A strong foundation for future coaching roles

For many clubs, this pathway helps build long-term coaching capacity while supporting athlete development beyond competition.

Coach New to Ontario

Dive Ontario also supports coaches moving to Ontario from another province or country.
Coaches with experience elsewhere may be seeking:

  • Recognition of prior coaching experience or certification
  • Guidance on Ontario and Canadian coaching pathways
  • Connections with clubs looking for coaching staff

Dive Ontario works with clubs and national partners to help coaches understand local requirements, integrate into the provincial system, and continue their professional development within Ontario.

Coaching Education and Support

Regardless of how you enter coaching, Dive Ontario is committed to supporting:

  • Safe sport education
  • Ongoing professional development
  • Clear pathways for coaching certification
  • A collaborative provincial coaching community

Coaching is a rewarding way to stay connected to diving, make a meaningful impact, and support athletes at all stages of their development.
