Dive Ontario update on Government Announcement to Commence Phase One of Roadmap to Reopen

Mississauga, Ontario – On Monday, June 7th, 2021, the Ontario Government announced that Phase One of the Provincial Roadmap to Reopen has been moved up, and is going into effect on Friday, June 11th, 2021. Dive Ontario would like to provide an update on what this means for the organization and its stakeholders.

Dive Ontario is excited that the Roadmap to Reopen will commence sooner than planned, as it means we are seeing a turn in the right direction. Although Phase One does not involve many changes for the organization or our divers, it allows for a better understanding of timelines going forward.

Please note that the athletes who currently meet the exemption criteria – those who are identified by the National Sports Organization as athletes who are training for the Olympics – are still the only athletes eligible to train indoors. As of right now, the government’s roadmap outlines that indoor sports activities will not open until Phase Three, which will come into effect no earlier than July 23rd.  However, Dive Ontario is hoping to get divers into pools as soon as possible. We will continue to work with our government partners and other aquatic sports organizations to try and have indoor sports activities begin in Phase Two, or at the very least, to have a more broadly defined exemption criteria applicable as of Phase Two. Dive Ontario will also work with clubs on outdoor training options, as we all await the news on indoor training accessibilities.

The commencement of Phase One of the Provincial Roadmap to Reopen brings us hope that divers will be back in the pools sooner than first expected, which shines some positivity on our community going forward.
